Why did I make this film?
I am Robert, a grateful, recovering alcoholic and addict. As I sat in detox, (more than once) I was bombarded by videos and lectures about addiction, alcoholism and brain chemistry. Most of these were presented by well-meaning medical people, priests, preachers and therapists. But my brain was like a big, oozing container of stinky mush, and I was not ready to hear anything about recovery. Especially from those people! THEY WEREN'T LIKE ME! They had jobs, families, homes, cars -- all the things I had drank and drugged away. The message I wanted to hear was from people like me: struggling, tough, hardened addicts and drunks. That is why I made this film.
Real Sobriety is for that alcoholic or addict who is white knuckling it, rocking in thier seat, and sweating through thier bed sheets with the anxiety of a new day in recovery. It features real people sharing remarkable stories of what it used to be like when they were out there, and what life is like today, clean, sober, productive and happy.
And these are people you will relate to: sober bikers, prison chaplain, coffee shop manager, nurse, military veterans, waitresses, even a sober doctor; men and women who have walked the walk, and now, in Real Sobriety, they talk the talk.
